IOSH Managing Safely
A course designed as an introduction to safety and health in the workplace for managers. The Managing Safely programme concentrates on training the manager to apply sound management principles to safety and health issues as part of a total management strategy.
Objectives
On successful completion of the course the manager will be able to:
- Apply basic management principles and practices to safety and health issues as part of a total management strategy;
- Set practicable safety and health objectives and plan and implement courses of action to achieve them;
- Recognise safety and health hazards present in the workplace and the types of control measures needed to manage them;
- Take account of risks from work activities arising from human factors;
- Ensure that adequate information, training and supervision is provided for employees in the organisation;
- Investigate incidents involving injury or damage in order to determine the causes and take appropriate remedial action;
- Communicate effectively on safety and health issues with superiors, the workers they are responsible for and safety and health professionals;
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of health and safety legislation and understand the main legal responsibilities of employers and managers and act to fulfil them.
Course Content
Managing Safely covers the following modules:
- Module 1 – Managing Safely – Course Overview
- Module 2 – Reactive Monitoring
- Module 3 – Health & Safety Legislation
- Module 4 - Risk Assessment & Risk Control
- Module 5 – Common Hazards
- Module 6 – Active Monitoring
- Module 7 – Safety Management Systems
Method of Assessment
Assessment will be carried out by Angela Taylor Training and moderated by IOSH. Achievement of the objectives of the course will be assessed in two ways:
- A written paper in the form of an objective multiple choice test
- A practical risk assessment
- 50% or more must be achieved for both written and practical assessments.
An aggregate of 55% overall must be achieved to entitle the candidate to receive a Managing Safely Certificate.
Administration
Maximum number of delegates – 15
The training programme will normally be presented over two consecutive weeks, covering three days each week (usually Tuesday to Thursday). This allows busy managers to attend their place of work at either end of the week so that they can then concentrate on the course.
Alternately, if preferred, the entire course can be completed within one week of longer days or provided on a 1 or 2 day a week basis.
