Management Briefing

A one day course designed as an introduction to safety and health in the workplace for managers who are required to manage efficiently and effectively compliance with both their organisation's safety policy and safety and health legislation.

Aim
To ensure managers:

understand how safety and health can and should be treated as an integral part of their responsibilities, using the same general approach used in other aspects of the manager’s work;

understand why incidents involving injury or damage occur;

have a basic understanding of the specific procedures used in assessing risks, developing control strategies and evaluating performance;

appreciate the significance of attitude to risk and of physical and psychological limitations in the causation of incidents leading to injuries or damage;

are aware of the responsibilities falling on employers and themselves in relation to safety and health and the procedures for dealing with breaches of those responsibilities;

have the capacity to communicate effectively on safety and health matters with those who work for them, with those they report to, and with specialist safety and health practitioners whom they approach for guidance;

are able to recognise the hazards likely to be present in their place of work and the type of action which may be needed to control and manage them.

It is not intended to cover a detailed description of technical factors, ways of controlling risks, or the in depth requirements of regulations and codes of practice.
